Just Be Relevant

"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
'No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devotes tot he one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.
'Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life." Matthew 6 : 19 - 21, 24 - 25a

When we were little, we were always asked "What do you want to be when you grow up?" We dreamt about becoming teachers, police officers, musicians, scientists. We dreamt of careers without thinking about job security, a salary, or amount of schooling. We were already dreaming of the legacy we wanted to leave behind, even if those words weren't stated.

As college students, that question has never been more important. We are at a stage in our lives where we are choosing things we will be doing for a significant amount of time. We are preparing and practicing skills that will be useful in our lives. We are looking for careers and searching for that security. But are we still focusing on living relevant lives like we did as kids? Are we thinking about our legacy or just about our paycheck?

I don't want to sound harsh, I know many people that are choosing careers that provide them with resources to give and better the world. But that was not my first thought when I choose engineering and I think it's true of our generation. We are blessed to go to a school with a great average starting salary. As engineers we have knowledge and resources to better our world and expand the kingdom of heaven. This begs the question, would you rather live a secure life or a relevant life?

So what are you building toward in your life? Are you going to get a job making the big bucks to donate money to campus ministry, aid organizations, and churches? How about getting a degree in engineering only to go into full-time ministry? Or what about taking your engineering knowledge to Africa to provide clean water? I so desire for all of us to live relevant lives; to leave a legacy at Mines, to not live a complacent life after graduation.

How are you being relevant now? What do you want to be when you grow up? How are you going to be relevant?
